Your computer desktop is the area on your screen, when nothing is open and there is just your icons on a background. That background is called your virtual desktop, and you can quite easily change the appearance of the background by inserting a "wallpaper" into your system.

Once you have the image loaded on your screen "right mouse click" on that image and select "set as wallpaper". It's that easy!
